Leeds United will look to sign an experienced backup goalkeeper during the summer transfer window and could do business on that front in the coming days, reliable journalist Phil Hay has claimed.
The Lowdown: Time running out
The Whites have had an eventful summer transfer window, losing key players in Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha but bringing in the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra.
Saturday’s 2-1 win at home to Wolves was a positive start to the Premier League season, although that doesn’t mean that new signings aren’t needed between now and deadline day.
Victor Orta and co could look at bringing in an experienced goalkeeper, providing Illan Meslier with stronger competition over the coming months.
The Latest: New goalkeeper incoming?
Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic on the day of the Wolves game, Hay claimed that a backup stopper could arrive as soon as next week.
In response to a supporter’s query about possible incomings, he said:
“Marsch implied that a back-up keeper will arrive next week, more experienced than Klaesson. They’ve been thinking about doing that all summer.”

The Verdict: Makes perfect sense
While Kristoffer Klaesson is a promising ‘keeper, he is only 21 years of age; and having played just once at this level, he might not be a reliable enough option if Meslier picks up a long-term injury, with those two currently the only senior options as Marsch’s last line of defence at Elland Road.
The Frenchman is only 22 himself, so it makes complete sense to sign someone more experienced, perhaps even somebody who has been in the Premier League for a number of years.
Meslier is the undoubted first-choice ‘keeper for Leeds but a sudden absence would weaken the Whites, especially if the still-maturing Klaesson is the man on whom they have to depend over a lengthy period.
