Newcastle United have lost one of their young talents to Premier League rival Everton.
Seventeen-year-old Lewis Gibson finalised a switch to the Merseyside club on Thursday.
The Chronicle claims that an initial £1m fee was agreed, but the figure could rise to £6m.
Gibson, who will join up with Everton’s Under-23s side, has put pen to paper on a three-year contract.
The transfer is a slightly strange one from Newcastle’s point of view as the club were seemingly impressed with the defender having recently promoted him to the reserve team.
Gibson’s performances in the Under-18s side last season warranted him a step up, but the youngster will now continue his development at a different club.
The defender is making progress on the international stage as well after he earned a place in the England Under-17s squad for the European Championships, which ended in a penalty shootout defeat to Spain.
After Gibson’s move was confirmed, Newcastle fans took to Twitter with differing views.
Some are unhappy that the club sanctioned a move, while others are satisfied with the cash the Magpies will receive.
