Writing in his regular column for The Daily Record, Chris Sutton has urged Scotland boss Gordon Strachan to make his striking dilemma very simple, by turning to just one man.
What’s the story?
The saga of Leigh Griffiths and Gordon Strachan has been one of the enduring storylines of the national manager’s time in charge of Scotland. Griffiths failed to win a start yet again mid-week, having to settle for an appearance off the bench in meaningless match against Canada.
Chris Sutton knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a successful striker having had a successful career starring for the likes of Celtic and Blackburn Rovers, winning multiple major honours.
Now he’s urging Strachan to commit to playing Griffiths.
As quoted in his column for The Daily Record, Sutton said:
For me, Strachan has to pick Griffiths. I’m fully aware that, like many of his rivals for the position, he has not played as much as he should have done this season for the Scotland gaffer’s liking. Strip it all away and, without doubt, Griffiths is the No.1 finisher in the squad. If you need a goal it’s not a tough choice, Gordon.
It’s an interesting talking point ahead of Scotland’s crucial World Cup Qualifier against Slovenia tomorrow. Who should Strachan pick?
The right choice?
With Steven Fletcher and Jordan Rhodes also vying for a spot leading the Scotland attack, Griffiths does face competition if he’s to get a start at Hampden.
Neither of those players have scored more goals than the Celtic hitman this season despite Griffiths not exactly getting a regular game at Celtic Park.
Fletcher has made 32 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday this season, scoring just 6 goals. Jordan Rhodes flopped at Middlesbrough, failing to net once in the Premier League and has gone on to score just 3 in 10 starts at Fletcher’s club, the Owls.
In contrast Griffiths has 14 goals in 30 appearances for the Hoops, only 16 of which have been starts.
It’s clear that while not first choice under Brendan Rodgers at the moment he is the man Strachan must turn to if Scotland are to get a vital World Cup Qualification result.
