According to , the 33-year-old has reportedly hired one of the most prominent law firms in Spain to help him buy La Liga team Espanyol – a side he played for between 2022-24, terminating his contract in the summer before joining Gremio. The report adds the Danish international holds a 'grudge' against the club's current owners.

Gremio striker Braithwaite, who helped Espanyol return to La Liga as they were promoted through the play-offs earlier this year, is said to be a critic of the club's owners – the Rastar Group. They are reportedly not very popular with fans which could open the window for the ex-Barca attacker.
